By Teo Shin Xian, Co-Founder and Pet Nutrition Advocate at ME Paws. Choosing dog food in Malaysia can feel overwhelming, but a good diet starts with biology, ingredient quality, and how gently the food is prepared.
1. Dogs Need Bioavailable Animal-Based Nutrition
Dogs can digest some carbohydrates, but their anatomy is still built around highly bioavailable animal nutrition. A quality dog food should prioritize named muscle meats and organ meats such as heart, liver, and kidney instead of vague meat derivatives, corn gluten meal, soy protein, or heavy starch fillers.
2. Fresh Food, Kibble, and Canned Food Are Not Equal
The biggest difference is processing. Gently cooked fresh pet food uses human-grade meats, organs, vegetables, and natural supplements prepared at lower temperatures. Dry kibble is usually extruded under high heat and pressure, while canned food is retort-sterilized. Higher heat can reduce natural nutrient retention, which is why many ultra-processed foods rely on synthetic vitamin premixes after cooking.
3. Gentle Cooking Supports Nutrient Retention
Fresh meals prepared at controlled low temperatures help preserve moisture, amino acids, and heat-sensitive nutrients. For pets with sensitive digestion, this can support firmer stools, better nutrient use, and less food waste passing through the body undigested.
4. How to Read a Pet Food Label
Check the first three ingredients. Premium food should lead with named animal proteins such as beef, chicken, salmon, turkey heart, or chicken liver.
Watch for ingredient splitting, where one low-quality ingredient appears as several smaller items such as corn, corn gluten, and corn bran.
Look at the preservative and additive list. A long list of artificial colors, chemical preservatives, or synthetic fillers can be a sign of heavy processing.
5. Moisture Matters for Pet Health
Fresh food naturally contains much more moisture than dry kibble. This hydration supports kidney, bladder, and digestive health, especially for dogs and cats that do not drink enough water on their own.
